2nd Bundesliga: Top ranked FC St. Pauli caught flat-footed by furious Holstein Kiel

2nd Bundesliga: Top ranked FC St. Pauli caught flat-footed by furious Holstein Kiel

December 17th, 2021 / 2nd Bundesliga / Matchday 18 . .

Holstein Kiel caught championship leaders FC St. Pauli wrong-footed and won the prestigious north duel that took place today, the first matchday of the second half of the league. The "Storks" surprised today the football community with a deserved 3-0 (3-0) victory.

"We simply did not play well today. Too many failed passes, too many technical errors - untypical for us. You can see that we still have a lot to work on," said St. Pauli's coach Timo Schultz and added: "Maybe that was a warning at the right time, in order that the boys perceive over the Christmas days: 'We have to open the throttle'."

The scorer of Kiel's first goal today, ex-St. Pauli and ex-Werder Bremen player Fin Bartels, on the other hand, was overjoyed: "This win was incredibly important, but it should only be the starting signal for a hopefully better second half of the season."

Like all other teams Kiel will enjoy now a three week winter break to refresh body and mind. Holstein will continue the championship on January 16 with an away match at Gazprom Arena Gelsenkirchen against relegated Bundesliga veterans FC Schalke 04. St. Pauli will welcome as guests Erzgebirge Aue from Saxonia the day before.

Fin Bartel’s goal was a kind of booster for Holstein. Holstein Kiel’s coach Marcel Rapp (in charge of the first team since October when he took over the position from Ole Werner who left the club voluntarily and now in December signed with Werder Bremen) opted for a compact flat five-man defence. And this was preppy successful because St. Pauli was unable to execute their usual game. On top of that, the club from Hamburg St. Pauli revealed unusual unattentiveness in their defense line. After a cross from Sterner it was a chaotic situation in the penalty area of the guests, the ball bounced back and forth and landed in the end at the feet of the completely free-standing Finn Porath. The ex-Hamburger SV player scored the 2-0 for Kiel (29th).

Fabian Reese forwent another counterattack (35th) before Benedikt Pichler scored the next goal for Holstein Kiel shortly before the half-time whistle: after a brilliant vertical pass from Sterner, he rushed towards Vasilj, dribbled round the goalkeeper and scored the 3-0 for the home side (45th + 1).
