SV Werder Bremen won the first friendly in the training camp with a narrow 2-1 against 2. Bundesliga club Karlsruher SC. Newcomer Burke scored twice at his debut.
An Werder’s Czech international goal keeper Jiri Pavlenka entertained the audience with a slapstick moment to remember. When going for a wide throw to open the match he happened to hit the forward moving Werder midfielder Nicolai Rapp in the back and the ball bounced back perfectly for his namesake Karlsruhe’s Swiss striker Simone Rapp who said “thank you very much” and scored to bring his team in the lead.
Werder improved specifically in the first quarter of the second half and equalized through Burke shortly after the restart. With the new signings, Goller and Park, giving away the lead, it looked like a draw for a long time until Burke turned the game around with his brace in the closing stages.
