Raheem Sterling and Harry Kane fired England into the Euro 2020 quarter-finals as they sealed a 2-0 win against Germany that ended decades of hurt at the hands of their bitter rivals on Tuesday. Sterling struck with 15 minutes left in a tense last 16 tie at Wembley before Kane clinched England's first knockout stage victory over Germany since 1966. In the 55 years since England beat the Germans in the World Cup final, the Three Lions had endured a painful litany of defeats against Die Mannschaft when the stakes were highest.
England were eliminated from the 1970, 1990 and 2010 World Cups by Germany, who also beat them in the Euro 96 semi-finals at Wembley.
But Gareth Southgate's side have finally exorcised the ghosts of Paul Gascoigne's tears and their own manager's penalty miss 25 years ago.
Ukraine beat Sweden 2-1 on Tuesday night, with the winning goal coming in the final minute of extra time.
The match had seemed destined for penalties with several shots hitting the woodwork of the goal and 10-man Sweden appearing as if they would hold out until the end, but as the game edged into three minutes of added time, substitute Artem Dovbyk headed in a cross from Manchester City's Oleksandr Zinchenko from close range.
It was an extra-ordinary, eight-goal thriller that ended with a 5-3 victory for Spain. A bizarre own goal gave Croats the lead, then Spain fought back to lead 3-1. Two late goals from the Croats forced extra-time. However, from there on, it was all La Roja who scored twice in three minutes to secure victory.Belgium ended Portugal's European Championship defence with a 1-0 win in Seville, despite losing Kevin De Bruyne and Eden Hazard to injuries in the last-16 clash.
With both sides facing a daunting route to Euro 2020 glory, it was Belgium who emerged to reach a quarter-final tie against in-form Italy thanks to Thorgan Hazard's long-range strike.
