England shocked the opponent hardly started the game with a sensational left foot drop-kick of Leonardo Bonucci into the left corner after a wide cross from the right wing. Through the whole first half Italy had no answer to the cool English match plan.
However, in the second half things changed with a double substitution of Italian coach Roberto Mancini who sent Berardi and Cristante on the field for Immobile and Barella in minute 54.
Now, Italy dominates and scores the deserved equalizer after a corner.
No more goals force into extra time and after 120 minutes Dutch referee Björn Kuipers asks the players for the shoot-out.
Here, England coach Southgate had an unlucky hand by choosing Rashford and Sancho that were sent on the field seconds ago in the last minute of extra time. Both could not control their nervousness. But England goal keeper Pickford kept the team in the game by saving hero-like the well shot penalties of Belotti and Jorginho.
In the end it was heartbroken 19 year old Bukayo Saka who could not beat Donnarumma with the last penalty.
Italy is European Champion with Gianluigi Donnarumma honoured man of the tournament.
